At the 1981 season opener at Riverside International Raceway, Richard Petty and Kyle Petty took part in one of NASCAR’s most unusual number swaps.
Richard, normally identified with the legendary No. 43, drove the No. 42 STP Chevrolet, while Kyle took the wheel of the No. 43. The move gave Petty Enterprises its best opportunity to place the No. 42 into NASCAR’s Winner’s Circle program.
Richard finished an impressive fifth in the No. 42, while Kyle finished 20th in the No. 43. After Riverside, both returned to their familiar numbers, making this one-race swap a unique piece of Petty family history.
